Welcome to the website of THE BIG READ in Taos, New Mexico.  The Big Read is a project of the National Endowment for the Arts, and is sponsored here in Taos by SOMOS, Taos’ premier literary organization, in collaboration with the Taos Public Library.

Just what is a Big Read?  The Big Read is a month-long party, and everybody’s invited.  The idea is that all of us who live here in Taos County will read the same book at the same time and be inspired to talk about the issues it raises.  The book is Sun, Stone, and Shadows: 20 Great Mexican Short Stories. The collection, edited by Jorge F. Hernandez, contains stories by celebrated Mexican authors of the 20th century, including Octavio Paz, Carlos Fuentes, Juan Rulfo, Jose Emilio Pacheco, and many more.

We’ll be giving the books away FREE at our kickoff event at the Taos Public Library on Saturday, November 2, and we’ll have dozens of other events and activities throughout the month to encourage people to talk about the stories and share their own.

Check out our EVENTS tab to find a list of 12 exciting events to celebrate the Big Read in November and December.
